SCAPHOID FRACTURE

The scaphoid bone in the wrist is the most commonly fractured of all of the carpal (wrist) bones. A scaphoid fracture most often occurs as the result of a traumatic injury or fall onto an outstretched hand. Symptoms may include pain at the wrist by the base of the thumb, swelling, and weakness with grip.

SCAPHOLUNATE LIGAMENT TEAR

The scapholunate ligament connects two of the main carpal (wrist) bones together and is the main stabilizer of the scaphoid bone. The function of this ligament is to ensure that the carpal bones move in unison and allow for easy rotation of the wrist. If the scapholunate ligament is injured, the carpal bones can move in opposite directions. leading to wrist pain, weakness, swelling, and wrist instability.

SCAPHOID LUNATE ADVANCED COLLASPE (SLAC)

SLAC is associated with the dissociation of the scapholunate ligament and is a condition which eventually leads to degenerative osteoarthritis. Symptoms may include pain and swelling of the wrist and a decreased range of motion.

SCAPHOID NON-UNION ADVANCED COLLAPSED (SNAC)

SNAC is associated with a fracture of the scaphoid bone which failed to heal and is a condition which eventually leads to degenerative osteoarthritis. Like SLAC, symptoms may include pain and swelling of the wrist and a decreased range of motion.

KIENBÖCK'S DISEASE

This condition is caused by decreased or eliminated blood flow to one of the carpal (wrist) bones called the lunate. When this bone is deprived of its source of nourishment, it begins to undergo necrosis and die. Symptoms may include pain, weakness, and/or stiffness in the wrist and eventual deformity of the wrist.

Dr. Loredo’s Approach to Treating Wrist Pain

Depending on the severity of the condition, Dr. Loredo may attempt to treat the condition non-surgically through the use of anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), steroid injections, splinting, resting and icing, or physical therapy. In the event that non-surgical treatment is ineffective, Dr. Loredo will opt for surgical means to treat the specific condition which is causing the Wrist Pain.

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

Dr. Loredo uses the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques available. Most patients enjoy instantaneous relief from pain with little to no post-operative downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what condition I have?
Only a medical professional can definitively diagnose the cause of your Wrist Pain through physical examination, ultrasound, or X-ray. However, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with the conditions listed above, please contact our office to make an appointment.

Is there anything I can do to prevent Wrist Pain?
Yes, you can try the following things to prevent or ease wrist pain:

  • Avoid flexing or extending your wrists repeatedly
  • Avoid repetitive grasping while your wrist is flexed
  • Keep your wrists straight as much as possible even during sleep using wrist braces as an aid
  • Rest your hands and wrists frequently

Does having Wrist Pain mean that I need surgery?
Not necessarily. Dr. Loredo will evaluate your individual condition and will consider all non-surgical treatment methods first such as anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) to relieve inflammation and pain, steroid injections to reduce swelling and pain, the use of splints, resting and icing the affected area(s), and/or physical therapy. In the event that these conservative measures do not resolve the pain or the condition has progressed beyond the point that it is feasible to attempt non-surgical treatment, Dr. Loredo will recommend surgical intervention. You can take comfort in knowing that Dr. Loredo's treatment centers around your degree of symptoms, not just your x-ray images.
